Google March 2025 Core Update: What We Know So Far

Thursday morning, coffee in hand, everything calm. You open Search Console and see that your traffic has dropped 32% overnight. You have not touched anything. No technical error. No manual penalty. A Core Update has landed on you.

Or the opposite: you suddenly see an unexplained +40% in impressions. That is not magic either: the algorithm has reshuffled the ecosystem and this time you are on the good side of the deck.

Google Core Updates are deep changes in how the algorithm evaluates quality and relevance. They are not fine-tuning: they are full re-evaluations. Here is what happened with the March 2025 update, how to know if it affected you and, above all, what to do now.

What is happening with the March 2025 Core Update?

Google announced the roll-out on 13 March 2025. Full deployment: 14 days. It became one of the most discussed updates in SEO communities since the September 2023 Helpful Content Update.

The signals that gained weight:

01
Stronger E-E-A-T

Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness. Websites without identifiable authors, a solid About page or qualified external references lost weight.

02
Generic AI-generated content

Not because AI was used, but because the content adds no value. Posts with no point of view, no own examples and no verifiable data are pushed down systematically.

03
Clear semantic structure

Pages with confusing H2/H3 headings, long unfocused paragraphs or multiple topics mixed into the same URL were penalised compared with clean, well-structured content.

04
Behavioural signals

Very high bounce rate, low dwell time and pogo-sticking. Google rewards pages where people find the answer and stay, not exit traps disguised as content.

05
Domain reputation

Brand mentions, links from reputable media and qualified age. Small domains without real authority now compete worse in informational queries against established sites.

How to know whether this update affected you

Three quick checks in Search Console (Performance > Search results):

  1. Compare 13 March vs 28 March, the full roll-out window. Filter by country and device. If you see a sustained drop of 15% or more in clicks or impressions, you were affected.
  2. Separate informational and commercial queries. Core Updates usually hit informational blog content harder than transactional pages.
  3. Review individual pages. The pages that lose are usually those sitting around positions 4-15. Top 3 results suffer less; page 2 can simply disappear.

If all of this is negative and you still see fewer leads, check whether Google Business Profile changed, whether you lost featured snippets or whether AI Overviews are taking clicks. Not every traffic drop is caused by a Core Update.

What NOT to do if the update hit you

  1. Do not delete content in bulk. Aggressive, poorly executed content pruning makes things worse. Remove only what is clearly obsolete, duplicated or has no traffic and no purpose.
  2. Do not rewrite everything in one weekend. If you change everything at once, Google takes 2-4 weeks to re-evaluate. Iteration works better.
  3. Do not hire a “cheap audit” from someone promising guaranteed recovery. There is no guarantee. Anyone who promises one is lying.
  4. Do not change the whole site structure. Changing URLs, permalinks or hierarchy without a strategy is a disaster. Speak to a professional first.
  5. Do not panic after 7 days. Core Updates stabilise after 4-8 weeks. What you see in week one is not final.

What you CAN do meanwhile

01
Audit E-E-A-T on your pillar pages

Do your top posts have an identified author, photo, bio and LinkedIn? A well-built About page? Real cases? If not, that is your first fix.

02
Update dates and data

Any 2022-2023 post with old statistics loses. Refresh figures, cases and broken links. An updated dateModified sends a freshness signal.

03
Improve 5-10 posts in depth

Identify those that were on page one and dropped. Rewrite direct answers, add FAQ schema, improve titles and add own examples. Typical recovery in 4-8 weeks.

04
Clean thin content

300-word posts with no clear SEO purpose: merge them into broader pillars or 301 redirect them to related content. Never leave orphans.

05
Strengthen your brand off-site

Media mentions, corporate LinkedIn, public case studies. Branded queries are the most resilient against Core Updates and AI Overviews.

How long will everything take to stabilise?

A typical Core Update pattern:

PhaseTimeWhat happens
Initial roll-out1-2 weeksSharp reshuffling; high volatility
Primary stabilisation3-5 weeksThe algorithm settles its evaluation; fewer day-to-day changes
Full stabilisation6-8 weeksMore definitive positions; partial recoveries for those who make improvements
Next update2-4 months laterNew evaluation round; opportunity to recover lost ground

What we see in client projects: those who do the work — E-E-A-T, schema, rewritten content — recover 60-80% of lost traffic in 6-10 weeks. Those who do nothing usually recover nothing.

FAQs about the March 2025 Core Update

How do I confirm it was a Core Update and not a technical issue?

Cross-check dates. Compare 13-28 March 2025 with the previous month. If the drop matches the update window and affects informational content more than commercial pages, it is probably the Core Update. If it affects only one country, one page or coincides with technical changes, it may be a technical issue.

Can I recover all lost traffic?

100% recovery is not realistic. 60-80% can be realistic with good work in 6-10 weeks. Traffic you lose and do not fight for is often won by a competitor who does act.

Why does Google penalise AI-generated content?

Google does not penalise content just because AI was used. It penalises generic content with no added value, no author, no evidence and no own examples. Poorly used AI often produces that type of content.

Should I remove low-performing posts?

Only when they are obsolete, duplicated or have no strategic purpose. In many cases, merging, updating or redirecting is better than deleting.

How long should I wait before making major changes?

Wait until the update is fully rolled out and at least a few weeks of data are available. Analyse first; then prioritise changes by impact.
